Most dog lovers would find the comments made by River Cottage chef, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, tasteless, literally
His claims that eating puppy meat is no worse than eating a pork chop have sparked outrage. According to an article in the Daily Mail on 1st October, Fearnely -Whittingstall, who regards himself as a ‘real food campaigner’ suggested that society has unfairly dictated which animals can be farmed and which can be kept as pets. Fearnley- Whittinstall told the Radio Times: ‘In principle, but not in practice, I have no objection to a high-welfare organic puppy farm.
Quite understandably his comments have caused concern and criticism of the celebrity Chef. A Dogs Trust spokesperson said ‘the concept of breeding dogs for food in any conditions, high welfare or not, is wholly unacceptable. Dogs are companion animals and provide immeasurable love, comfort and support to owners.
Suggestions have alluded to his comments, especially given the controversial nature, may be a gimmick for his new found vegetarianism, which has a publishing deal assigned to it of £1.9 million.
Whether that is the case or not, I abhor his comments and would go as far as to suggest he has never owned a dog. Perhaps if he can resist eating it he should be introduced to the pleasure of dog ownership, under careful supervision of course.
Perhaps he should be renamed Hugh Canine-Cannibal
