Owning a dog, from a cost perspective, does not just involve the initial purchase, there are many cost implications throughout the dog’s lifetime.
Firstly you need to establish a feeding routine for your dog and find a food that satisfies your budget and your dog’s nutrient requirements.
Where do you start…..discussing various food options with your vet is a good place to begin. Another very good place to seek advice is your local pet store, many of the larger chains have an expert to hand who has been sent on pet nutrition courses.
Costs for feeding can vary dramatically. Don’t be fooled into thinking that the more you pay is indicative of quality, it is not always the case.
When I got my Schnoodle, Woody, as a puppy he came with a bag of the food he was used to but I wanted to change to a brand. A very good friend of mine who has studied dog nutrition in great detail, including attending courses run in theUSintroduced me to a natural brand of food with no additives and preservatives. I had to change Woody over very slowly to the new food to minimize any upset to his stomach.
My choice of food requires him to have less but I know it is quality food with the right nutrients to provide for his needs. Another benefit is that his poop does not smell too bad and he suffers with very little wind.
As with many elements of dog ownership we all have our personal preferences but if in doubt seek professional advice.
